Details of Apollo-mission Earth (and Earthrise) imagery referenced in the tables above
Apollo-4 Earth image1967-11-09AS04-001-0596Apollo-4 (also known as AS-501) was designed to test all aspects of the Saturn V launch vehicle with an un-manned CSM (Command and Service Module) payload. A 70 mm still camera mounted in the CSM automatically photographed Earth every 10.6 seconds from about one hour before to one hour after apogee (which was at 17,346 km). 715 high-resolution pictures were obtained. AS04-001-0596 is one of them. This YouTube video features an animation of the whole set.
Apollo-6 Earth image1968-04-04from NASA videoSaturn-5 interstage ring separation during the Apollo-6 launch (at 36 seconds in this NASA video), with Earth in the background. The cameras that provided such film clips were housed in special pods inside the rocket and were jettisoned as the stages fell away. They descended by parachute to the ocean, where they were recovered. Apollo-6 (also known as AS-502) was the last un-manned test flight in the Apollo program.
Apollo-7 Earth image1968-10-11AS07-03-1545This series of 4 photos shows the Saturn-4B with its clamshell doors open above the east coast of Florida at an altitude of 230 km, ready for the manned Apollo-7 command module's test approach and simulated docking (with what would be a real LEM in the Saturn-4B in Apollo missions starting with Apollo-9).

Apollo-8 Earth image1968-12-22AS08-16-2593This is the first full-disk Earth image ever captured by a human (likely Astronaut William Anders). It was taken at a distance of around 27,000 km. North is upward. South America is in the lower part of the image, North America (under large cloudy areas) is at the upper left, and part of west Africa is at the far right. A deep and active low pressure center lies over the Atlantic to the east of North America. It has a sharp cold front trailing southwestward to southern Florida. This image was featured as the cover article of a Life magazine special issue for 1968.
Apollo-8 Earthrise image1968-12-24AS08-14-2383A series of Earthrise photos (the first ever such images obtained by men in lunar orbit) was taken by the crew of Apollo-8 on 24 December 1968. Image AS08-14-2383 is one of the series. When rotated -135 deg to put north at the top, it becomes clear that the north-south line of the day/night terminator crosses the African continent. Western and southern Africa are visible just to the west of the terminator. The Atlantic Ocean and various cloud systems cover the rest, except at the far left South America is outlined by slightly darker tones of blue than in the nearby ocean.
Apollo-8 Earthrise image1968-12-24AS08-14-2392Earthrise photo taken from Apollo-8 in lunar orbit (possibly during its sixth orbit around the Moon). This Earthrise was featured as the cover article of a special issue of Look magazine.
Apollo-8 Earth image1968-12-26AS08-14-2528Earth photo taken from Apollo-8 during trans-Earth coast (the return journey from the Moon), at around 178,000 km from Earth. North is to the left. South America is at the center of the image. North America, mostly covered by clouds, is at the far left. The clockwise rotation of clouds around a deep low pressure center is visible off southern Chile. Astronaut James Lovell saw it and said "At the tip of South America, there is a great swirl of clouds down there. It looks like a great storm". Over the eastern Pacific, off northern South America, is a large diffuse sun glint area. Lovell said "I can see the bright spot. It's - I guess it's the subsolar point. It's off of South America, it appears to me. It is a grayish spot compared to the blue waters surrounding it. It's undefined in diameter, though, I mean, it's not a clear round spot at all; it's just a raggedy one." The southeastern US is mostly cloud-free, and the Caribbean and the Florida regions have a mix of cloudy and cloud-free areas, with some of the waters visible in a turquoise shade rather than blue. Lovell said "And then up to the left hand side, or towards the north, we can see the light waters around the West Indies, and we can actually see Florida."
Apollo-8 Earth image1968-12-26AS08-15-2554Photo taken by the Apollo-8 crew as they approached Earth, probably at around 135 hours into the mission at an altitude of around 125,000 km. The image shows the western Pacific, Australia and parts of the Indian Ocean and southeast Asia. North is at the upper right.
Apollo-9 Earth image1969-03-07AS09-24-3657The CSM Gumdrop seen from the LEM Spyder during the fifth day of the Apollo-9 Earth-orbital mission. West Texas is in the background. It is partially covered by clouds, some of whose shadows can be seen on the ground. The CSM docking target is visible in its nose; the clover-like object jutting out from the CSM is the high-gain S-band antenna.
Apollo-10 Earth image1969-05-18AS10-34-5013Earth image from Apollo-10 from about 67,000 km, taken at the beginning of the outbound journey to the Moon. Apollo-11 Earth image1969-07-18AS11-36-5381This Earth image was taken on 18 July at around 54.5 hours into the Apollo-11 mission at about 321,000 km from Earth during the outbound journey to the Moon. In it, north is toward the lower right. South America is at the upper left and North America is at the right. Many cloud areas are seen over the two continents and the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
Apollo-11 Earthrise image1969-07-20AS11-44-6555On 20 July 1969, during the 5th lunar orbit of the Apollo-11 command module, the astronauts noticed Earth ahead of them as the capsule moved in its direction. At around 0402 UTC one of them took a series of 5 photos in which Earth "rises" from the lunar horizon. Image AS11-44-6555 is one of that series, which is presented in this animation. The capsule's motion toward Earth caused it to rise quickly above the lunar horizon from the astronauts' point of view.
Apollo-11 Earthrise image1969-07-21AS11-44-6642On 21 July at around 128 hours into the mission, the Lunar Module ascent stage with Moon-walking Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin Jr. approaches for its rendezvous with the Apollo Command Module piloted by Astronaut Michael Collins. This breathtaking photo, taken by Collins, includes Earth just above the lunar horizon
Apollo-11 Earthrise image1969-07-22AS11-44-6649One of a series of Earthrise photos over Mare Smythii taken at about 135 hours into the Apollo-11 mission just after the TEI (Trans-Earth Injection) burn that would take the Command Module out of lunar orbit and put it onto a trajectory toward Earth
Apollo-11 Earth image1969-07-23AS11-44-6672Photo taken at 207,000 km from Earth during Apollo-11's trans-Earth coast (the return journey from the Moon). North is toward the lower right. North and West Africa are clearly visible. Otherwise most of the image consists of the waters and clouds of the North and South Atlantic Oceans.
Apollo-11 Earth image1969-07-24AS11-44-6689Photo taken at 32,850 km from Earth near the end of Apollo-11's trans-Earth coast (the return journey from the Moon). North is downward. The southern part of Africa, including the South Atlantic coastlines of Namibia and Angola, is clear of clouds. Clouds cover much of the South Atlantic and the central part of Africa. Farther north, brownish tones are seen in the land areas of North Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
Apollo-11 Earth image1969-07-24AS11-44-6692Photo taken, possibly at around 20,000 km from Earth, not long before the Apollo-11 capsule re-entered Earth's atmosphere. North is to the right. The southern part of Africa, including the South Atlantic coastlines of Namibia and Angola, is clear of clouds. The ocean along and near the coast is bright due to reflection of solar rays from the water. Cloud layers cover much of the rest of the South Atlantic. Deep convective clouds (thunderstorms), some with sharp shadows due to the low sun angle, are seen over parts of central Africa.
Apollo-12 Earth image1969-11-15AS12-50-7362Photo taken by the Apollo-12 crew at around 13 hours into the mission at about 112,000 km from Earth, at the beginning of the trans-lunar coast (the outbound journey to the Moon). The reference image has been rotated so that north is upward. In it is the expanse of the western and central Pacific Ocean, with Australia in brown at the far edge of the image at around the 8 o'clock position. A large area of sun glint is visible to the north and northeast of Australia.
Apollo-13 Earth image1970-04-12AS13-60-8591Photo taken from Apollo-13 at around 0254 UTC 12 April (~7 h 40 min after launch) at roughly 68,000 km from Earth. Other details are the same as for image AS13-60-8594 below, except the Korean Peninsula is hidden by clouds in this photo.
Apollo-13 Earth image1970-04-12AS13-60-8594Photo taken from Apollo-13 at around 0440 UTC 12 April (~9 h 27 min after launch) at roughly 85,000 km from Earth. The image mostly covers the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic ice cap is at the top. The Kamchatka Peninsula and part of the Asian coast are at the upper left. A deep low pressure center is east of Kamchatka and the clouds with a second low cover most of Japan. A small cloud-free area at the left of the image reveals the Korean Peninsula and its surrounding waters. This photo is part of a series of 11 that were taken at 22 min intervals (except in one case the interval was about 1 hour). The sequence starts with AS13-60-8590 (~7 h 18 min after launch, at ~0231 UTC on 12 April and roughly 65,000 km from Earth) and ends with AS13-60-8600 (~11 h 37 min after launch, at ~0650 UTC on 12 April and roughly 105,000 km from Earth). Here is an animation of the 11 photos. In it, eastern Asia progressively comes into better view, while the terminator approaches the Kamchatka peninsula.
Apollo-15 Earth image1971-07-26AS15-91-12343Photo taken by Apollo-15 during the outbound trans-lunar coast (the outbound journey to the Moon), at a distance of roughly 50,000 km from Earth. South America dominates the lower part of the image. Parts of Central and North America are seen at the left and upper left. A deep low pressure centre lies just south of Greenland, whose icecap is visible at the northern extemity of the image. A large comma-shaped cloud extends from the low, with a front trailing back to the southeastern USA.
Apollo-16 Earth image1972-04-16AS16-118-18885Photo taken by Apollo-16 from around 27,000 km at approximately 2210 UTC (~4 h 15 min into the mission (which was ~1.5 h after trans-lunar injection)); a huge area of ice and snow is seen over Arctic regions and northeastern Canada; most of the continental USA and Mexico are visible; the comma cloud of a low pressure center is clearly defined over the northeastern USA. In the previous orbit, at ~3 hr 27 min into the mission, when the astronauts took in the same view from around 14,000 km, Ken Mattingly had described the scene by saying that "you just can't believe how beautiful it is. See the reds in the desert down there and the southern United States and northern part of Mexico. And from here, you see the Great Lakes and the State of Florida out there. And it's just absolutely something!"
Apollo-16 Earthrise image1972-04-19AS16-120-19187Earthrise photo taken from the Apollo-16 command module at 244 km altitude during its second revolution in lunar orbit at around 77 h into the mission (on 19 April at approximately 2350 UTC); the polar ice cap dominates the Arctic region to the right in the Earth image
