Remote sensing of the
Earth-atmosphere system from space
(Images, instruments, and techniques)

SkyLab EREP imaging
cloud systemssymbolic scanning

Below is a checklist of Remote sensing of the Earth-atmosphere system from space (images, instruments, and techniques) on postal items (stamps, souvenir sheets, aerogrammes, postal cards, etc.). Catalog numbers, years of issue, and notes on the items featured are given when available. If readers know of additional information or images, please contact the authors using the e-mail addresses at the bottom of this page.

In this page, green highlighting indicates manned mission items, as follows:
1. those with Earth images from Soyuz, Salyut, Mir, the Space Shuttle, and the ISS; and
2. those that refer to imaging instruments, techniques or symbolic scanning from any manned mission.

Philatelic items including Earth images from the Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab missions are found in three separate pages:

The Notes for entries in this page identify the spacecraft that provided the image, if it is known. In some cases uncertainty in that identification is indicated by words such as "possible". In many cases the source of the image is unknown.

Some Apollo missions also provided beautiful Earthrise images. In this page, a few Earthrise images from non-Apollo sources are highlighted in yellow. Earthrise images from Apollo missions are found in a separate page (Apollo-mission Earth (and Earthrise) imagery).

The two tables Blue Marble (2001) and Blue Marble (2012) present Earth images constructed from imagery from specific satellites12,16. The first such image, Blue Marble (1972), is a photograph from the Apollo-17 mission and its philatelic items are found in the Apollo-mission Earth imagery page.

Symbolic scanning or imaging items are limited to those for the Earth, not the Moon or any other planets. The word "scanning" is used when the across-track or along-track path is depicted; "imaging" is used when a single view or snapshot is depicted, but the scanning is not.

1Symbolic "scanning" is used when the view appears to be a swath of the Earth; symbolic "imaging" is used when the view appears to be a single snapshot of the Earth.
2Card cut from October page of Kniga International 1986 space calendar.
3Even though these full-disk images appear to be true-color, the instruments on Meteosat and GOES can only provide false-color images.
4Early (1960s) Molniya communications satellites had imaging capabilities, but images from Molniya satellites are rare.
5For more information see http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/landsat/news/earthscapes-stamps.html
6This full-disk true-color image of unknown source, found on many websites as well as on the dust jacket of the New Concise World Atlas, Oxford University Press, 4th edition from 2013, appears to be from a geo-stationary satellite, but may be a composited and enhanced image.
7The Earth Resources Experiments Package (EREP) on Skylab took a comprehensive and systematic image survey of the Earth from space, taking some 36,000 photos from 1973 to 1974. Imaging was done by several cameras, the main one with six spectral bands.
14MKF-6 or 6M (Mehr-Kanal Fotografie) was an East German multi-spectral camera with 6 lenses designed to photograph Earth's surface from space. It was used for the first time in 1976 on Soyuz-22. It was also used on Salyut-6, Salyut-7 and Mir.
15MKS-M (Mehr-Kanal Spektrometer) was an East German multi-channel spectrometer. It had two separate components: the biospectrometer measured solar radiation reflected by Earth's surface, and the atmospheric spectrometer measured radiation scattered by air molecules and aerosols. Prototypes were tested on Interkosmos-20 (1979 launch) and Interkosmos-21 (1981 launch). The updated version was used on Salyut-7 and Mir.

1Symbolic "scanning" is used when the view appears to be a swath of the Earth; symbolic "imaging" is used when the view appears to be a single snapshot of the Earth.
2Even though these full-disk images appear to be true-color, the instruments on Meteosat and GOES can only provide false-color images.
3The Mesoscale Lightning Experiment (MLE) was designed to obtain nighttime images of lightning in an attempt to better understand the effects of lightning discharges on each other, on nearby storm systems, on storm microbursts and wind patterns, and other interrelationships over an extremely large geographical area. The MLE employed payload bay color video cameras and a 35 mm handheld still picture camera to observe lightning discharges at night from active storms.
4The Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM) was a solar observatory aboard the Skylab space station that was a product of the late 1960s Apollo Applications Program (hence "Apollo" in the name). It was manually operated by the Skylab astronauts. There were 8 major solar-observing instruments on the mount which together could observe the Sun in wavelengths from 2 to 7000 Å (angstroms), corresponding to soft X-ray, ultraviolet, and visible light wavelengths. Those instruments were two X-ray telescopes, two hydrogen alpha telescopes, an extreme UV spectroheliograph, a UV spectroheliometer, a UV spectrograph and a visible light coronagraph.
6The four Skylab missions are identified on the Skylab-mission Earth imagery page.
7The Earth Resources Experiments Package (EREP) on Skylab took a comprehensive and systematic image survey of the Earth from space, taking some 36,000 photos from 1973 to 1974. Imaging was done by several cameras, the main one with six spectral bands.

The table below is a chronological list with details of (un-manned satellite) Blue Marble imagery found in the tables above.

Blue Marble imageYearImage details/explanation
Details of (un-manned satellite) Blue Marble imagery Referenced in the Tables Above
Blue Marble (1972)1972The first such image, Blue Marble (1972), is a photograph from the Apollo-17 mission and its philatelic items are found in the Apollo-mission Earth imagery page.
Blue Marble (2001)2001NASA created a Blue Marble (2001) image from a composite of numerous EOS MODIS images from 2001 and 2002. It covers the whole globe while the original Blue Marble (1972) image covers only the region of Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Antarctic. The western and eastern hemispheres are the most commonly-depicted BM2001 areas. However, a Europe-Africa sector, an Atlantic sector, an Australia sector, and an Antarctic sector have also been found on postal items.
Blue Marble (2012)2012NASA created a Blue Marble (2012) image from a composite of numerous S-NPP VIIRS images from 2012. The image, which is centered over North America, is a quasi-full-disk image. The Blue Marble (2012) image does not have the same field of view as a full-disk image from a geostationary weather satellite because of the lower-than-geostationary orbit of the S-NPP satellite. Compared to such a full-disk image, the Blue Marble (2012) image emphasizes the features in the central part of the disk at the expense of those in the outer parts of the disk (e.g. the high latitudes and polar regions are seen poorly or not at all).
