RAMMB severe weather research focuses on mid-latitude severe weather forecasting/nowcasting and on the analysis of the near-storm environment and cloud top structure. Further emphasis has been placed on the monitoring and understanding of mesocale processes. Specific goals include development of improved forecasting/nowcasting techniques and products, designing effective blends of satellite data with other observing systems (e.g., model output or radar), determining observing-strategies that maximize the capabilities of satellite data, and identifying improvements in present instrument applications as well as future observing systems, like GOES-R.
