Hydrostatic Approximation and its Consequences

Most current forecast models use the hydrostatic equation , which assumes an exact equilibrium in the vertical between the pressure gradient force and the gravitational force.

However, if the atmosphere were exactly in hydrostatic equilibrium, there would be no vertical motion, clouds and precipitation.

Find out :

  1. How can we reconcile these contradictions?

  2. What are the consequences of assuming this equilibrium?
