Blizzards

Blizzard: A blizzard is a severe winter storm with strong winds and reduced visibilities due to falling and/or blowing snow, with such conditions lasting for some minimum amount of time. In popular usage the term is often taken to mean simply any heavy snowstorm accompanied by strong winds. Earlier definitions included a temperature criterion for cold temperatures (e.g. -7°C or colder), but this element has been dropped from current definitions.

The etymology of the word "blizzard" is obscure. It is of American origin, possibly from the Upper Midwest, where it probably came into use following the hard winter of 1880-1881.

For the purposes of analysis, forecasting and verification, modern weather services have established numerical thresholds for the elements that constitute a blizzard. For example, the US National Weather Service uses the following criteria:

  1. Sustained wind or frequent gusts to 35 mph or higher;
  2. Considerable falling and/or blowing snow reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less; and
  3. Those conditions last for at least 3 hours.

Other countries may use different thresholds according to their own needs and climatology. For example, the Meteorological Service of Canada uses the following criteria:

  1. Wind 40 km/h or greater;
  2. Visibility 400 m or less in blowing snow or blowing snow combined with falling snow; and
  3. Those conditions last for at least 4 hours (south of the treeline) or 6 hours (north of the treeline).

In Antarctica, the term blizzard refers to the violent winds that descend from the ice cap to sea level in coastal areas (katabatic winds). Visibilities may be very low in blowing (and/or falling) snow, but it can also happen that those winds scour a packed snow or ice surface, with no loose snow and no falling snow; in such cases the wind is the principal component of the Antarctic blizzard, and low visibilities are secondary.

Postal items that are based on a photo by expedition photographer Frank Hurley at the Cape Denison base camp during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition2 are highlighted in yellow in the table below.

(Ice crystal) Virga

Ice crystal virga is ice crystals falling from clouds and sublimating before they reach the surface. It looks like wispy streaks beneath the clouds. It can fall from low cold-season clouds such as stratocumulus or stratus, or in dry areas, often mountainous, from convective clouds cold enough to produce ice crystals at their bases rather than raindrops. (Liquid drop virga is composed of evaporating raindrops).

(Selected) Snowflakes

Snowflakes: This table includes selected philatelic items that feature snowflakes. No attempt is made to be complete, since there are probably thousands of items, most of which include tiny drawings of snowflakes. We do include all known philatelic items with detailed snowflake depictions, however, as well as interesting examples of a variety of types of items (e.g. cancels, postal stationery, stamp booklets, cachets on covers) that depict or refer to snowflakes.

An international campaign called Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers (PPRG) took place in 2009. It was dedicated to raising awareness of the fragile state of the polar regions and glaciers in this era of global warming. The official logo for that campaign was a stylized snowflake. Some 55 countries issued postal items for PPRG, and most of them include that logo. They are all found in the PPRG page.

The fourth International Polar Year (IPY) was a large international scientific program that focused on the Arctic and Antarctic regions. It took place in 2007 and 2008. In addition to the official logo of the program, there was an unofficial logo in the form of a symbolic snowflake with 6 arms. That unofficial logo is present in many stamps that were issued for the fourth IPY. They are included in the 4th IPY section of the IPY page.

Ken Libbrecht is an American professor of physics at CalTech University who has become an expert in the physics of ice crystals and is known for his beautiful photographs of snowflakes. Some of those photographs have been reproduced on stamps from the USA (Scott 4101-4116, issued in 2006) and from Sweden (Scott 2647 and 2648a-2648e, issued in 2010). Images of all those stamps, along with some related philatelic items, are found in the Libbrecht page.

Ukichiro Nakaya was a Japanese physicist who studied the crystal structure of snow and ice and was captivated by the beauty of snowflakes. His photographed snowflakes and ice crystals, produced artificial ice crystals, studied the relationship between crystal structure and meteorological conditions and created the first snowflake classification system. See the Nakaya page for a Japanese stamp (Scott 2749) commemorating him and his work.

Some philatelic items show snowflakes with 4 or 5 or 8 arms rather than 6. Of course all snowflakes are hexagonal, so items with 4 or 5 or 8 arms are in error.

1"Project Blizzard" was the project to restore Mawson's base camp hut at Cape Denison, Commonwealth Bay, Antarctica. It began in 1984. Some of the fundraising was done privately, through the sale of stamp-like labels. Cape Denison, with its frequent violent winds, came to be known as "The Home of the Blizzard": hence the name "Project Blizzard".
2The Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE), led by Douglas Mawson, was based at Cape Denison in Commonwealth Bay. Scientific measurements and exploration of the area by coastal and inland sledging journeys were carried out in 1912 and 1913. Commonwealth Bay is possibly the windiest coastal location on Earth, because of its physical morphology: the long steep slope that leads down from the high Antarctic plateau to the Bay at sea level is favourable for the formation of violent katabatic (downslope) winds that can create blizzards if there is fresh snow available to lift into the air. One main goal of the expedition was to make scientific measurements in various disciplines. A program of meteorological and magnetic measurements was carried out at Cape Denison. Cecil Madigan was the expedition meteorologist.
