(Liquid-drop) Virga

Liquid-drop virga is rain falling from clouds but evaporating before it reaches the surface. It may look like wispy streaks, or a thin veil that partially obscures what is behind it. It can fall from high-based warm-season convective clouds, often in dry mountainous areas, that produce raindrops at their bases rather than ice crystals. (Ice crystal virga is composed of sublimating ice crystals).

Other rain-related

This table includes philatelic items related to rain and rainfall, other than depictions found in the Rain falling table above.

There exist a large number of philatelic items for meteorological returns in general (observations of various meteorological parameters sent by mail to a central agency), and more specifically for rainfall returns (those in which rainfall only is measured). The rainfall returns items are not included in this table. They can be found in the Meteorological returns and weather reports, or instrument returns table of the National Weather Services page.

Philatelic items related to artificial rain, rainmaking or rain enhancement are not included in this table. They are found in the Weather modification page.

Thunderstorms and lightning

A thunderstorm is defined by the presence of thunder and/or lightning. It may or may not cause heavy downpours, strong winds and hail. This table includes a selection of stamps and other philatelic items with images of lightning, either realistic or symbolic, or that refer to lightning or thunder in some way. No attempt is made to be complete, except for items that show realistic depictions of lightning. Items showing the clouds that cause thunderstorms, (cumulonimbus clouds, or CBs), are found in the Clouds page.

There exist a large number of philatelic items for meteorological returns in general (observations of various meteorological parameters sent by mail to a central agency). Some record details of observed thunderstorms and lightning. They are not included in this table. Rather, they can be found in the Meteorological returns and weather reports, or instrument returns table of the National Weather Services page.

Morris Bower was a British amateur meteorologist who in 1924 set up in his home an organization that he called the Thunderstorm Census Organization (TCO). It existed until his death in 1982. Its goal was to record thunderstorm activity in the UK. This was done via special PPO postcards that were distributed to volunteer observers. Some examples of those reports are found in the Morris Bower page.

3Ono no Komachi (ca 825-900) was a Japanese poetess. Legend has it that she lived during a severe and prolonged drought. At long last she composed a prayer for rain in the form of a poem written on a card which she put into a miniature boat. She then released the boat into a pond in the Imperial Garden. That scene is illustrated in a woodblock print from the early 1760s by Suzuki Harunobu, (Ono no) Komachi Praying for Rain, which is reproduced in Sierra Leone 2459. Thanks to the power of Komachi's poetry, the rain started and continued for three days. Harunobu's print shows the rain already falling, even as Komachi is pushing her little vessel away from the shore.
