1"Mr. ZIP", informally "Zippy", is a cartoon character used in the 1960s by the United States Post Office Department, and later by its successor, the United States Postal Service (USPS), to encourage the general public to include the ZIP Code in all mailings. The type1 design is a standing version of Mr. ZIP, the type2 design is a running version and the type3 design has Mr. ZIP riding a rocket. In 1983, an extended ZIP+4 code was introduced; it includes the five digits of the ZIP Code, followed by a hyphen and four digits that designate a more specific location. The term ZIP is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan; it was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently and quickly (zipping along) when senders use the code in the postal address.
