"Cyclone" is sometimes used as a colloquial term for "tornado". For such usage see the tornadoes, waterspouts, and dust devils page.
Card cut from October page of Kniga International 1986 space calendar.
The typhoon (warning) tower was used as a signal to inform fishermen and other mariners when they could sail into or out of the port.
The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is a 1 to 5 rating based on a hurricane's sustained wind speed. Category 3 and higher hurricanes are considered major hurricanes because of their potential for significant loss of life and property damage. Category 1 and 2 storms, while weaker, can still be dangerous. For more detail see the Saffir-Simpson wind scale.
Hurricane David struck Dominica on 29 August 1979 as a Category 4 hurricane shortly after the time of the image in Barbados.555. It was the strongest hurricane ever to hit Dominica (since records began in 1851) until the Category 5 Hurricane Maria struck the island on 18 September 2017.
Although a hurricane eye appears to be depicted, hurricanes probably never occur in Ghana in Western Africa!
