becquerel (Bq) | Antoine-Henri Becquerel (1852–1908) |
---|
A.H. Becquerel was a French physicist, Nobel Prize winner and the grandson of Antoine César Becquerel. In his Mémoire sur la polarisation atmosphérique et l'influence du magnétisme terrestre sur l'atmosphère (Bern, Dibner, 1880) he suggested that particles from the sun moving along the Earth's magnetic field lines caused electric currents which were the source of the aurora and polar magnetic disturbances. This supported earlier work on the aurora by researchers such as Ørsted and Gauss.
To honour his scientific work, Becquerel's name was given to the SI (International System of Units) unit of radioactivity: becquerel, symbol Bq, equal to one reciprocal second.
