Instructions for Installing the Natural Disaster Information Cards
(NDIC) VISITview Lesson
In order to install this lesson, you will need to create a new
directory on your hard drive, download a self extracting, compressed file
into this directory, and then run this file in order to extract the data
and program files. NWS Users: We strongly encourage you to install
these files on a "modern" PDW (300 MHz Pentium II or faster, and at least
64 MB of RAM). If your PDW is being used as a Linux machine, please
contact us for special installation instructions)
I. To get and install the VISITview NDIC lesson files on a
Windows system:
- Create a directory on your computer to hold this lesson. For
example, open a Command Prompt window and type:
cd \
mkdir
visit\ndic
cd visit\ndic
You can also create this new directory using the Windows
Explorer or My Computer.
- Get the self-extracting exe file (it is about 4 MB in size)
by aiming your Web browser to
ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/visit/ndic_jan23.exe
or ftp://rammftp.cira.colostate.edu/bikos/visit/ndic_jan23.exe
- Be sure to put this ndic_jan23.exe file into the same
directory that you created in step 1.
- To extract all the image and program files, just run the
ndic_jan23.exe file by either:
- opening My Computer or the Windows Explorer
and clicking on the filename ndic_jan23.exe
- or -
- opening a Command Prompt window, typing cd
\visit\ndic, and then typing ndic_jan23
II. This completes the installation. To
join the training session:
- open the "Display" Control Panel and make sure your Settings for the
Desktop Area is 800 by 600 pixels
- click on the visit.bat filename from My
Computer or Windows Explorer.
Alternatively,
you could open a Command Prompt window, and type:
cd \visit\ndic
visit
- A ViewClient window should appear, with a large red
triangular pointer in the main window and drawing/animation controls
below. If a VISITview server is actively hosting the NDIC session, then
you will also see images in the ViewClient window. The session will last 30 to 45 minutes.
- Dial into the conference call (consult email with setup instructions
for the phone number).
III. To run this NDIC lesson locally (for example, to train
others in your office who were unable to attend the group session), open a
Command Prompt window and type visitlocal. A
ViewClient window will appear which includes additional controls to
load Selected lesson pages (or to move to the Next or
Previous page).
During the lesson, if a message "Communications problem - restart"
appears at the bottom of the ViewClient window, then you will need
to close out that window (double click over the icon in the upper left
corner), and then enter the visit command again to restart
the ViewClient application.
In the Command Prompt window where you enter the
visit command, you will see various communications message
appearing; for the most part, you may ignore these.
Note...If you are using a Unix or Linux system, you
will need to install the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software on your
local computer...see the JRE instructions
page.
