RAMMB: Regional and Mesoscale Meteorology Branch CIRA: Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere

RAMMB Training Activities & Accomplishments

VISIT - Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training

A significant effort is being undertaken by team members through their participation in the NWS/NESDIS' VISIT program (also see the VISIT mission statement). The RAMM Team is developing and conducting remote sensing training materials in order to facilitate the integrated use of satellite- and radar-based observations in the National Weather Service warning and forecast environment. Training materials take the form of web-based content, interactive web-based content, OPTEL-delivered PC-audioconferencing and classroom/onsite presentations.

SHyMet - Satellite Hydrology and Meteorology

A new course dedicated to operational satellite meteorology, the main objective of which is to prepare National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Weather Service (NWS) users for the latest polar orbiting and geostationary satellite data and products in the warning and forecast programs with direct links to Government Performance Results Act (GPRA) goals. For more information please visit the SHyMet Website.

WMO's Regional Meteorological Training Center of Excellence (RMTCoE) Activities

The RMTCs are specialized satellite applications training centers designated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). CIRA has interacted with the RMTCoE in Costa Rica and Barbados since 1996 and with the newer RMTCoE in Brazil and Argentina since 2006. For more information please visit the RMTCoE Website.

Web-based Tutorials on the Use and Utility of GOES Imagery

The Team has just released a new version of its first tutorial about the GOES Imager. The original, An Introduction to GOES-8, is still available but we encourage the use of the newer version since it benefits from our improved experience with the GOES sensors, their data and the derived application products we have developed. The newer version, An Introduction to the GOES Imager, is also recommended for its richer source of example imagery taken from the extensive archive we have developed in the four years since the original was produced. This tutorial is especially recommended for the beginner in satellite meteorology.

Another tutorial deals with the more advanced use of the GOES Imager and its derived imagery products, and has been available since late spring, 1998. This module is intended for the more experienced research or forecasting meteorologist.

A more topically specific tutorial detailing the unique capabilities of the GOES 3.9 micrometer imaging channel is also available.

NWSFO Instruction & Consultation

RAMM Team members conduct periodic visits to NWS offices and other domestic and international RAMSDIS sites to assist in the training of forecasters and scientists in the use of satellite imagery.
