This page contains philatelic information on the Soviet propaganda-design satellites. Catalog numbers, years of issue, and notes on the satellites featured are given when available. If readers know of additional information or images, please contact the authors using the e-mail addresses at the bottom of this page.

All of these items show a widely-used propaganda satellite design, intended as a substitute for actual satellite designs. The use of Soviet propaganda-design satellites is common on early space-age postal items. The designs may have been a compromise between stamp and cachet designers need to represent the new spacecraft and the Soviet censors need to keep secret many aspects of the Soviet space program.

The most-widely-used propaganda design has an overall shape similar to Sputnik-3, but with a more cylindrical body, and a more rounded nose than the conical-shaped Sputnik-3. At the base of the cylindrical body or "thimble" is a larger-diameter ring or "collar". In addition to the body style, most images of the propaganda design have two or more of the following distinguishing features:

1Propaganda design variants are similar to the most-widely-used propaganda design, having paper-clip-like antennas on both the top and the bottom.
2Other propaganda designs have a body style similar to the most-widely-used propaganda design, a general "thimble and collar" design, but missing most of the other distinguishing featues common to the most-widely-used propaganda design.
3"Soyuz" in the text is the word "Union" in the quote from N.S. Khrushchev: "Socialism - this is that reliable launching (starting) pad (ground) which Soviet Union uses to launch its space ships." Therefore, the stamp was not intended to show Soyuz. Rather, the satellite on this item is often mis-interpreted as being Kosmos-3, since the stamp was issued on the launch date for Kosmos-3, 1962-04-24.

Russia (USSR)1969-03-17Baikonur(Red rubber-stamp) cachet on (known fake1) coverKosmos-272 launch

1Known fake cover, with a made-up Baikonur postmark, suspected to have been created by Boris Khoroshev from Moscow, and sold by a stamp dealer in Western Europe. There were no Baikonur Cosmodrome official postmarks until 1975 for the Apollo-Soyuz events. Reference the article written by Russian collector Oleg Vaisberg published as an Appendix called "Russian (Soviet) Space Covers" to Bruce Cranford's book "Space Covers: Dictionary & Identifier". See also, an analysis of the situation in a book published in 2008 called "Commemorative Space Covers from Collector Clubs of the Soviet Union, 1957 to 1980". Another indicator on these fakes is the use of a "first day" cachet that appears on most, but not all, of these fakes.
2AA no. = Tartuski Klub Kollektsionerov (TKK) [Tartu Collector Club] "Astronautika Annaalid" number. See Jim Reichman's Philatelic Study Report on Tartu Space Club Covers, 1962-1978, 2011. (e-mail: jgreichman (at) datawest.net).
