1Quasi-IDNDR items have an 'international' or 'organizational' weather and disaster theme but are not strictly IDNDR.
2In April 1992, the UN Secretary-General established a new Department of Humanitarian Affairs, which is responsible for providing a rapid and well-coordinated response to major and complex emergencies in order to save lives and contribute to rehabilitation and development for the affected population. The Department incorporates the former Office of the United Nations Disaster Relief Coordinator (UNDRO), as well as emergency units for Africa, Iraq and South East Asia.
3International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction also matches the acronym IDNDR for International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. By resolution 44/236 (22 December 1989), the UN General Assembly designated the second Wednesday of October International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction. The International Day was to be observed annually during the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, 1990-1999. In 2001, the UN General Assembly decided to maintain the observance of the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on the second Wednesday of October (resolution 56/195 of 21 December), as a vehicle to promote a global culture of natural disaster reduction, including disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.
4Through resolution A/RES/58/214, the UN General Assembly convened a World Conference on Disaster Reduction, to be held in Kobe, Hyogo, Japan, from 18 to 22 January 2005. The Conference was to take stock of progress in disaster risk reduction accomplished since the Yokohama Conference of 1994 and to make plans for the next ten years.
