This page contains philatelic information on the Early Bird (Intelsat-1), Bird-named Intelsat-2s, and Intelsat-2-4. Catalog numbers, years of issue, and notes on the satellites featured are given when available. If readers know of additional information or images, please contact the authors using the e-mail addresses at the bottom of this page.

This page covers only Early Bird (Intelsat-1), Bird-named Intelsat-2s, and Intelsat-2-4, not the rest of the Intelsat series. (Intelsat-2-4, the last of the Intelsat-2s, and subsequent Intelsats were not given Bird names.)

Early Bird / Intelsat-1 from 1965 should not be confused with the [failed] Earthwatch Inc. Earlybird launch from 1997.

Early Bird (Intelsat-1) and Syncom are similar cylindrical spin-stabilized spacecraft, but Early Bird is taller (smaller width-to-height aspect ratio), and Syncom has a larger nozzle in relation to the spacecraft body.

Items depicting a satellite based on the Syncom publicity photo are highlighted in pale yellow in the table below.

*The way the notes are presented depends on how the satellite is identified on postal items:

1Many Syncom images are similar to NASA's Syncom publicity photo, which does not look like any of the Syncom reference images provided. This publicity photo was created by Bob Special, a NASA technician at Cape Kennedy. The publicity photo shows a flame coming out of Syncom's apogee motor. This was probably to make the image more dramatic. Some of the stamp reproductions of the publicity photo eliminate the flame, as noted. It must also be pointed out that the real Syncoms had a larger cone-shaped nozzle extending outward from the apogee motor than shown on the publicity photo.
2Intelsat anniversary items are counted either from Intelsat's formation, as the INternational TELecommunications SATellite Organization (INTELSAT) in 1964, or from the launch of Intelsat-1 (Early Bird) in 1965.

Below is a list of Early Bird (Intelsat-1), Bird-named Intelsat-2s, and Intelsat-2-4 launch covers (including anniversary-of-launch covers, and launch-related event covers).

2Intelsat shares sold: The second set of five million shares were sold to the public, with the FCC responsible for apportioning sales. When these shares were offered on 2 June 1964, the public snapped them up. Comsat stock was very popular--so popular that the size of purchases was limited and, as a result, Comsat stock ownership was dispersed.
